This position conducts reviews of claims, inquiries, and requests for information in support of the U.S. Army Physical Disability Agency (USAPDA) Physical Evaluation Board (PEB). The PEB investigates the nature, cause, degree of severity, and probable permanency of the disability concerning the service member referred. PEB members evaluate the physical condition of the service member using criteria mandated by the Army and the physical requirements necessary.

AFSC intends to lever its cadre of medical professionals as an expert thought-network to push the thinking on several important fronts.
The Secretary of the Army is responsible for ensuring Soldiers are physically capable of performing their prescribed duties, and separating or retiring those whose physical limitations preclude them from continued military service, By law, eligible Soldiers separated due to service-related disability incurred in the line-of-duty will receive benefits. The determination criteria for determining whether a Soldier is or not fit for continued service is contained in the Physical Evaluation System (PDES).
This position conducts reviews of claims, inquiries, and requests for information in support of the U.S. Army Physical Disability Agency (USAPDA) Physical Evaluation Board (PEB). The PEB investigates the nature, cause, degree of severity, and probable permanency of the disability concerning the service member referred. The PEB provides a full and fair hearing as required by law, and provides recommendations and findings that establish the eligibility of a service member for retention, or separation / retirement. PEB members evaluate the physical condition of the service member using criteria mandated by the Army and the physical requirements necessary for that particular office, grade, rank or rating.
There are currently three locations where the Army conducts PEB proceedings: the National Capital Region Physical Evaluation Board (NCR PEB) and the PDA Headquarters in Crystal City, VA; the Physical Evaluation Board at Fort Sam Houston TX (TX PEB), and the Physical Evaluation Board located at the Joint Base Fort Lewis/ McChord (Lewis PEB).
Job Duties:
The PDES Physician shall be a qualified licensed Occupational Physician or Psychiatrist (or equivalent) that demonstrates the ability
to:
Conduct medical reviews of incoming cases and make recommendations in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.
Review recommendations, findings, and diagnoses of other medical physicians.
Understand and have knowledge of military unique equipment, training, weaponry and/or Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) requirements in order to make logical recommendations regarding a Soldierâs ability to return to work.
Articulate findings and recommendations, verbally and in writing, in a clear and understandable manner.
Review and recommend changes to various policy, procedure, and training documents.
Required Skills/Qualifications:
Ability to express ideas clearly and effectively in both written and oral correspondence to all levels of management, including presentation of briefs
Skill in using computer systems and current word processing, database, Adobe Professional , presentation software for building, storing, tracking, and retrieving cases
Knowledge of processes related to adjudication decisions, appeals, record of proceedings and disposition
Ability to work under pressure with short and conflicting deadlines
Analytical capabilities to perform research in areas of responsibility and determine appropriate follow-on activities
Ability to interface and coordinate the work of the organization with other offices in DoD, Military Departments and other governmental and contracting agencies
Ability to interpret, analyze, and apply pertinent laws, regulations, policies and precedents of VA VASRD and DES and Military Department specific PEBs and Medical Evaluation Boards (MEB)
Possess strong interpersonal skills with management and support staff
Maintain high standards of honesty, integrity, trust, openness, and respect for case review applicants and internal and external organizations
Ability to obtain and maintain government security requirements
Military Background is strongly preferred
Required Education Level:
M.B.B.S., M.D. or D.O. is required.
