SOUTH TEXAS VETERANS HEALTH CARE SYSTEM
The South Texas Veterans Health Care System (STVHCS) is comprised of two inpatient campuses: the Audie L. Murphy Memorial VA Hospital in San Antonio and the Kerrville VA Hospital in Kerrville, Texas. The STVHCS serves one of the largest primary service areas in the nation, with 63 counties, and is part of the VA Heart of Texas Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN 17), with offices located in Arlington, Texas. Providing a service to Veterans with a working staff of more than 3,100 employees, South Texas provides health care services for 93,000 Veterans. The STVHCS is a facility providing primary, secondary and tertiary health care in medicine, surgery, psychiatry, and rehabilitation medicine. It also supports a 90 bed Extended Care Therapy Center, a 30-bed Spinal Cord Injury Center, an eight-bed Bone Marrow Transplant Unit, and a Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center. Affiliated with the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, the system has an active ambulatory care program with numerous satellite outpatient clinics. The system dedicates 28,000 square feet to medical research, and there are more than 150 research investigators conducting over 500 research activities. The system has a National Institute of Health (NIH) funded General Clinical Research Center and the Veterans Evidence-Based Research Dissemination Implementation Center (VERDICT). The Biomedical Research Foundation of South Texas was created in 1990 to support the research mission of the system.

DUTIES:
As a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) you will deliver comprehensive anesthesia care in the pre operative, intra operative, and postoperative periods. Such anesthesia care includes the interviewing of patients and completion of a medical history; conducting a pertinent physical exam; reviewing pertinent radiological, laboratory and other diagnostic studies prior to surgery; analyzing subjective and objective data with clinical expertise to define potential anesthesia problems; formulating an appropriate anesthesia plan based on both surgical case requirements and individual patient needs; recording pertinent information according to established documentation guidelines; and administering and managing a variety of anesthetics including general, neuraxial, regional, and monitored anesthesia care. The CRNA should also have basic skills in pain management evaluations and procedures; should be skilled in the management of general invasive monitoring; and should have outstanding competence in airway management under all circumstances.
Tour of Duty: Rotating 8 or 10 hr shifts. Some weekend and holiday work required.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
a. Citizenship. Citizen of the United States . (Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit for qualified citizens in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g, of this part.)
b. Education
(1) A degree in nursing from a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate state-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant:
(a) The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC), an accrediting arm of the National League for Nursing located at 61 Broadway, 33rd Floor, New York, New York 10006. Additional information may be obtained from the NLNAC Web site ; or
(b) The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), an accrediting arm of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN). The CCNE accredits bachelorÂ's and masterÂ's degree programs and is located at One Dupont Circle, N.W., Suite 530, Washington, DC 20036. Additional information may be obtained from the CCNE Web site .
(c) In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, and unrestricted registration (see basic requirement in subparagraph c below) and the possession of a Certificate from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS) will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
(2) Graduate of an accredited nurse anesthesia educational program approved by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) at the time the program was completed by the applicant. The AANA has compiled current listings of approved training institutions, which are published annually in the December issue of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists Journal. The American Hospital Association in their Â"Guide to the Health Care FieldÂ" also publishes listings of approved training institutions annually in August .
c. Registration
(1) Condition of Employment. Current, full, active and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States or the District of Columbia. The nurse anesthetist must maintain a current, full, active and unrestricted registration to continue employment with VA. The appointing official may waive this requirement if the nurse anesthetist is to serve in a country other than the United States and has registration in that country (e.g. Philippines).
d. Certification
(1) On and after May 4, 1993, certification by the Council on Certification of Nurse Anesthetists is a requirement for employment. This requirement does not apply to non-certified nurse anesthetists employed by VA as a nurse anesthetist prior to May 4, 1993 and continuously thereafter. Any nurse anesthetist who leaves VA employment or vacates the nurse anesthetist occupation for another VA position, must meet the current requirement of certification for re-appointment as a nurse anesthetist. The CCNA and the Council on Recertification of Nurse Anesthetists have designated the AANAÂ's web site as a display agent for their information.
(2) Nurse Anesthetists will maintain recertification by meeting the Council on Recertification of Nurse AnesthetistÂ's requirements as a condition of employment.
e. Physical Requirements. A physical will be required for this position.
f. English Language Proficiency. Nurses Anesthetist must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d).
Unofficial transcripts are acceptable but they must show school attended, program and degree/date confered.
