Works under the general clinical supervision of the Clinical Director or designee and under the general administative direction of the Unit Director. Is responsible for the deliver! y of highly advanced and/or managerial psychiatric treatment to patients with mental illness and mental retardation. In addition to the evaluation of prospective patients who have arrived at the facility under voluntary or involuntary status, the staff psychiatrist is primarily responsible for the evaluation and care of all patients under his/her care. The latter involves the performance of a comprehensive psychiatric assessment, as well as actively participating in the formulation of the comprehensive treatment plan and providing psychiatric treatment. Current competency is achieved and maintained through relevant continuing medical evaluation. Works under minimal supervision with extensive latitude for the use of initiative and independent judment. Must understand that duties, location of work and shift pattern are subject to change as determined by the administration to meet the needs of the hospital. Must understand that duties may include exposure to blood or other pot! entially infectious materials. Employee actively participates ! and/or serves in a supporting role to meet the agency's obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Supports the mission and the vision of the facility.
Essential Job Functions:
Attends work on a regular and predictable schedule in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned.
1. Assessment (Psychiatric Evaluation/Scales/Physical Examination) (40%)
a. Evaluates patients presenting for admission to determine if the Mental Health Code criteria is met;
b. Performs comprehensive psychiatric assessment (history and mental status examination) in order to arrive at the most appropriate multi-axial diagnostic impressions and formulations;
c. When indicated, performs physical examinations and orders appropriate laboratory and diagnostic studies;
d. Monitors the patients response to treatment on a continuous basis; and
e. Documents by way of dictated note! s or legible handwriting all patient encounters related to assessment, rationale for treatment interventions and other related issues in order to outline the course of hospitalization. Frequency of documentation is appropriate to level of care patient requires.
2. Treatment (Medications, Responsiveness, Disposition) (35%)
a. Adheres to departmental guidelines pertaining to the prescribing of psychotropic medications (drug use guidelines, formulary guidelines, rule on the prescribing of psychoactive medications);
b. Provides treatment in accordance with current acceptable practices;
c. Evaluates the results of laboratory and other diagnostic studies and uses this information in the formulation of the treatment plan;
d. Provides referral services to the appropriate venue for treatment of patients if the care indicated is not within the scope of the individual practitioner or the resources of this hospital; and
e. Disposition â" Continuity of Care! ; Insures that discharge plans are timely and include provisions for af! ter-care and recommendations for further treatment.
3. Team Work (Treatment team, Responsiveness, Referrals) (10%)
a. Responds promptly to all calls;
b. Actively participates in the treatment team process;
c. Actively requests input from colleagues when indicated; and
d. Demonstrates a cooperative and supportive manner in working with supervisor, unit governance, staff, patients, families, and the general public in order to facilitate work and information flow.
4. Quality Improvement (5%)
a. Participates in PET Audits (Quality Systems Oversight);
b. Attends PIT Meetings (Unit, Medical Staff PIT activities, etc.);
c. When indicated, provides Plans of Correction for deficiencies identified by auditing committees/teams; and
d. Utilizes the principles of Continuous Quality Improvement.
5. Customer Satisfaction (Patient & Family Relations) (5%)
a. Practices in a manner that reflects esteem and respect for the patient! and family members;
b. Attentive to the needs of other co-workers and their ability to work toward a common goal for the patient; and
c. Attentive to Local Mental Health Authorities and general public in their needs.
6. Performs other duties as assigned in order to ensure services are provided. Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency's obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location. (5%)
Knowledge Skills Abilities:
1. Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and treatment appropriate to the age-related needs of patients served.
2. Thorough knowledge of medicine, psychotherapy, psychopharmacology, and supportive family and group therapy.
3. Thorough knowledge, skills and abilities in th! e specific area of psychiatry.
4. Thorough understanding of the cur! rent standard Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.
5. Advanced knowledge of the development, implementation and documentation of individualized care and treatment plans.
6. Ability to evaluate the age-specific needs of patients and implement an effective course, in coordination with other disciplines.
7. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers and subordinate personnel; to deal with the public; and to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
8. Knowledge of Positive Performance Management.
9. Physical ability to perform limited contact PMAB and CPR.
Bilingual preferred.
Sign Language preferred.
Registration or Licensure Requirements:
Licensed by the Texas Medical Board to practice medicine in Texas, plus three (3) years of work experience in the field of psychiatry. By the end of probationary status, must have controlled substance registration ! issued by the Texas Department of Public Safety and controlled substance registration issued by the United States Department of Justice, Drug Enforcement Administration.
Experience and Education:
Graduation from an accredited college of medicine with a residency in the psychiatry field.
Initial Selection Criteria:
1. Experience in an Acute/Chronic Psychiatric Setting providing consumer care.
2. Experience working with a multi-disciplinary team.
Additional Information:
This is a DSHS State Hospital direct client contact position and requires successful credentialing as a member of Rusk State Hospital Medical Staff.
