Central! Texas Veterans Health Care System (CTVHCS) is one of the larg! est integrated health care systems in the Department of Veterans Affairs and includes facilities in Temple, Waco, and Austin, TX. Community-Based Outpatient Clinics are located in Brownwood, Cedar Park, Palestine, and Bryan-College Station. TEXAS HAS NO STATE TAXES!

The Nurse Practitioner is assigned to Psychiatry Service at CTVHCS. The duties are as follows:

  • Performs initial and follow-up history and physical examinations consultations on inpatients and outpatients.
  • Orders laboratory tests, x-rays, EKGÂ's and comparable diagnostic procedures.
  • May complete discharge summaries.
  • Reviews referrals to residential care for medical appropriateness.
  • Serves as the physician extender representative of the residential care screening committee.
  • Provides education and counseling of patients and family in preventative care, medical conditions and use of prescribed treatment and drugs.
  • All progress notes, co! nsultation requests, reports of histories and physicals, and summaries written by the NP will clearly identify him/her as Nurse Practitioner.
  • May prescribe any medications included on the formulary of his/her supervising physician except for certain controlled substances.
  • The prescribing practices of the NP will be reviewed by the supervising physician.
This position may involve evening and weekend hours.
This position may also be filled as a Physician Assistant, but only one position will be filled.

Relocation Expenses: Relocation expenses are not authorized for this position. QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
Must be a citizen of the United States.
Must have be a graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The National Leagu! e for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or The Commission on Colle! giate Nursing Education (CCNE).
Must have current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
Must be proficient in spoken and written English.
Must possess a master's degree from a program accredited by the NLNAC or CCNE.
Must be licensed or otherwise recognized as a nurse practitioner in a state.
Must have prescriptive authority through the State in which licensed.
Must maintain full and current certification as a nurse practitioner from the American Nurses Association or another nationally recognized certifying body. (The certification must be in the specialty to which the individual is bei! ng appointed or selected.)

Applicant's education and length of nursing practice (experience) will be considered by a Nurse Professional Standards Board in determining the grade and salary of the applicant selected. Experience as a RN will be evaluated to determine if the experience is of an acceptable level of quality with regard to the following four dimensions of nursing: Practice, Professional Development, Collaboration and Scientific Inquiry. Each dimension of practice has criteria that demonstrate essential core competencies for VHA Nursing Personnel. The criteria are as follows:

Practice: practice, ethics and resource utilization,
Professional Development: performance, education/career development,
Collaboration; collaboration, collegiality,
Scientific Inquiry: quality of care, research.

Education/Experience Requirements:
Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of experience, or ADN or Diplom! a in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approximatel! y 2-3 years experience or a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years experience, or a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no experience.
Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years experience or Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 years experience.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
Prior experience in mental Health.
Prefer to have national certification in in Adult Psychiatry-Mental Health.
