DUTIES:
This position is located in the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center (MEDVAMC), Mental Health Care Line (MHCL). The MEDVAMC is recruiting for a Pain Medicine Physician. The spe! cialty of Pain Medicine is concerned with the study of pain, prevention of pain, and the evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of persons in pain. The special needs of our diverse veteran population are all considered when formulating a comprehensive treatment plan. The pain physician is responsible for developing and implementing treatment recommendations for a wide range of pain syndrome diagnoses. The pain physician confers with and serves as a consultant to other clinicians and provides various levels of care, such as prescribing medication, prescribing rehabilitation services, counseling patients and families, collaborating with a multidisciplinary team, and coordinating care with other medical and mental health care providers.
The Pain Medicine physician serves as a member of a multidisciplinary pain team including but not limited to pharmacy, physical therapy, nursing, psychiatry, and psychology specialists. Evaluates medical history and performs physica! l exams; orders and analyzes appropriate tests and laboratory exams. De! velops comprehensive treatment recommendations in collaboration with the patient, his/her family, primary care providers, and other specialists in the areas of biopsychosocial feedback, physical therapy, medication management, and interventional procedures.
In collaboration with other related specialists, assists with the development and implementation of MEDVAMC chronic pain programs; develops and implements programs to measure patient satisfaction; tracks and trends data related to pain management, to include but not limited to narcotic prescriptions analysis and the efficacy of prescribed treatment modalities.
The incumbent must have successfully completed an accredited Fellowship in Chronic Pain Management, although an original background in any of the following specialties is acceptable: physical medicine, family practice, or internal medicine. it is preferred that candidates demonstrate evidence of specialty training or work with the field of psychia! try and/or behavioral medicine.
The MEDVAMC is affiliated with Baylor College of Medicine as well as the University of Texas Medical School in Houston. Candidates should be academically oriented and will have an excellent opportunity to collaborate with multiple disciplines in patient care, education and clinical research. The successful candidate will be eligible for faculty positions at Baylor College of Medicine and will have the opportunity to participate in multidisciplinary patient care, education and clinical research. Rank is commensurate with credentials and prior experience.
Work schedules: Monday thru Friday, 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. or 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Licensure and Registration - Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States or in the District of Columbia. The Physician must maintain a current registration to continue employment with the VA
Educational requirements - Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are:
Schools of medicine holding regular institutional membership in the Association of American Medical Colleges for the year in which the degree was granted.
Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.
Schools (including foreign schools! ) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e. Puerto Rico), or in the District of Columbia as qualifying for full or unrestricted licensure.
For residents, graduation from an approved medical school as described above is required.
First-Year Residency (Internship) - Completed a first-year residency , or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which it was competed. For a VA resident, the appropriate Deans Committee and Resident Review Board may recommend appointment on the basis of the candidate's acceptability for residency training. Approved residencies are:
Those approved by the Council on Medical Education and Hospitals, American Medical Association, in the list published for the year the residency was completed,
OR
Other residencies or their equivalents which the Professional Standards Board determines to have provided an applicant with appropriate profess! ional training. The Board may determine that the residency requirement ! has been met if the candidate has completed 1 year of postgraduate education.
