VA TEXAS VALLEY COASTAL BEND HEALTH CARE SYSTEM
The VATVCBHCS is comprised of the Corpus Christi Outpatient Clinic (CCOPC), Corpus Christi Specialty Clinic (CCOPC-S), Harlingen Outpatient Clinic (HOPC), Health Care Center at Harlingen (HCC), Laredo Outpatient Clinic (LOPC), and McAllen Outpatient Clinic (MCOPC). The VATVCBHCS is a virtual health care system providing secondary and tertiary health care in medicine, surgery, psychiatry, and rehabilitation medicine. The VATVCBHCS also operates a 100-patient Home Based Primary Care program and a 200-patient Care Coordination Home Tele-Health Program. Through the utilization of 2 complex inpatient/emergency department contracts, approximately 1600 inpatient admission and 1200 ER visits are managed by VATVCBHCS. Affiliated with the University of Texas Regional Academic Health Campus, the system has an active ambulatory care program and serves ! as a teaching and training site for medical residents. The VAT! VCBHCS is responsible for an enrollee population of over 30,000 veterans and 25,000 outpatient visits annually.

You will serve as an Oncologist for the VA Texas Valley Coastal Bend Health Care System (VAT! XVCBHCS). You will be responsible for patient care, patient/family education, and participation in any indicated clinical research in Hematology and Oncology. You will provide comprehensive care for patients who have illnesses within the scope of hematology and oncology. The scope of these activities covers all phases of ambulatory care. You should demonstrate knowledge of preventative medicine and primary care as related to hematology and oncology (e.g. complications of disorders and treatments, side effects of medications used), the role of non-physician health care professionals and health care evaluation. Other duties include education of medical students and residents and/or supervision of other providers. You will respond to and complete consults received for the evaluation of hematology and oncology, including:
Perform a comprehensive, detailed, targeted, initial history and physical examination in compliance with national guidelines;
Order diagnost! ic studies such as laboratory tests, X-rays, electromyography (EMG), el! ectrocardiograms (EKGs) and other tests;
Consult with disciplines, as necessary, to complete the patient evaluation;
Carry out health promotion and disease prevention activities including education and shared decision-making.
Work Schedule: 8:00 - 4:30 p.m.; Alternate schedules may be necessary to meet the needs of the organization.
EXPERIENCE PREFERRED:
Board certified or board eligible in internal medicine
Fellowship trained in Hematology and/or Oncology
Interest and participation in academic research and education is highly desirable but not necessary QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

BASIC REQUIREM ENTS:
Must be proficient in written and spoken English.
D egree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been ! obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are: (1) Schools of medicine holding regular institutional membership in the Association of American Medical Colleges for the year in which the degree was granted. (2) Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted. (3) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or in the District of Columbia as qualifying for full or unrestricted licensure.
Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia,! or psychiatric disorders.
