Provides emergency medical service, including taking charge of life-threatening situations. Provide optimal emergency medical service at immediate scene of injury. Perform under stress and take charge in life-threatening si! tuations in order to stabilize a patient/inmate or save a life. Dispenses medications and checks blood sugar on a regular basis.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Responds to inmate medical needs and arranges for or provides treatment. Maintains security and safety procedures for inmates and staff. Provides health care instruction and counseling to inmates. Assists physicians, psychiatrist, and dentist. Processes inmates into jail by screening and evaluation of medical and mental histories. Responds to crises in orderly manner. Assesses problems and alerts control if more help is needed. Initiates EMS disaster plan in the event of a major disaster. Examines patients and determines nature and extent of injuries. Implements basic and advanced life support according to standing orders and state guidelines. Stabilizes patient/inmate before transporting to ER. Monitors patient during treatment and transport. Dispenses medicines and checks blood sugars on a regular basis. Ans! wers inmate and staff inquiries. Maintains medical charts and ! records. Set appointments for inmates with physicians, psychiatrist, or dentist. Maintains unit and exam rooms. Coordinates efforts with public safety personnel. Operates two-way radios and related equipment. OTHER REQUIREMENTS : Hiring will be contingent on passing a physical agility test, a criminal background check, post-offer, pre-employment physical/psychological exam and drug screen. Regular attendance is essential. Must arrive at work on time, prepared to perform assigned duties and work assignment scheduled. Must have the ability to work well with others. Physical demands and environmental factors are also essential function of the job. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Works indoors but may also work in inclement weather, including extreme heat and cold. Works varying day and night schedules. Ability to assess accident scenes, lift 100 lbs., handle gurneys and emergency life support services. Must be able to handle extreme stress in crisis situations. Must be able to bend, lift, a! nd perform CPR for extended periods of time. ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS: Daily contact with jail inmates, including convicted felons. Some exposure to body substances. Some situations involving rude or aggressive behavior or other difficult issues (e.g., threats of suicide). Must be able to work day or night shift hours and holidays with varying days off.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Required: High school or GED and Certified or licensed by the Texas Department of Health as an EMT or Paramedic. Graduate of nationally accredited paramedic program. Oral and written communication skills. Valid Texas Drivers License. Able to become licensed as a Correction Officer by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officers Standards and Education.
