GENERAL DUTY
DESCRIPTION: The Psychiatry Service staff physician provides comprehensive care
for patients who have illnesses within the scope of Psychiatric Medicine. In
addition to patient care, the psychiatrist may have responsibilities in other
areas, such as education and research. Serve as! a Staff Psychiatrist at the
South Texas Veterans Health Care Syste! m (STVHCS),/Victoria Outpatient Clinic in
Victoria, TX, Mental Health Product Line, Psychiatry Service responsible for
providing primary, secondary, and tertiary care in both hospitalized and
outpatient settings, identifying patients' mental and medical health problems
and designing diagnostic and therapeutic plans to meet these needs. Responsible
for coordinating activities of other health service personnel, resolving
problems affecting patient care and providing appropriate education for the
patient and/or family members regarding the patient's care, patient's illness
and its management. The position may require providing care through telehealth
services and also may require performing compensation and pension exams as
demands dictate. The care provided is to comply with clinical practice
guidelines as measured by the External Peer Review Program and the Clinical
Reminder reports.
The staff physician is responsible ! for teaching
house staff, medical students and other health professionals during ward
rounds, clinics and in conferences and providing supervisory control and
professional direction. As required, cover other duties as assigned to include
holidays, weekends, evening hours. Physicians whose responsibilities include
leadership and administration will be responsible for: enforcement of STVHCS
policies, rules and regulations, and of the Medical Staff Bylaws; to provide
leaderships in the application of clinical practice to organizational processes
and/or systems improving outcomes at the service level; to achieve excellent
customer satisfaction; to assure compliance with clinical practice guidelines
and to work collaboratively with others; to create a system to promote
state-of-the-art acute, chronic and preventive mental health care; for
performance improvement process; to keep abreast of changes as appropriate; and
to ! serve on committees as assigned. Also, those leaders who are involving ! in
teach programs and research are responsible to provide an environment
supportive of education, training and research.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:BASIC REQUIREM ENTS:
U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
D egree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine.
Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
Completed
a first-year residency, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of
Veterans Affairs for the year in which it was completed.
Preferred Experience:
1. Basic Life Support (BLS) and/or Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) training.
2. Board certified or Board eligible in Psychiatry.

PHYSI! CAL REQUIREMENTS: A pre-placement physical
examination will be completed prior to appointment to determine the physical
and mental fitness of candidates. The examination will be concerned with the
mental and physical ability of the applicant to satisfactorily perform the duties
of the proposed assignment and will include requisite laboratory and other
screening as required by Federal regulatory agencies. Physician applicants must
have the mental and physical ability to perform core privileges required by the
specialty position in addition to any specialty privileges requested.
